Compare complete situations, not two income numbers
This guide is for a photographer with some paid work who is considering changing employment or increasing business hours. List what your current work provides: salary, benefits, paid leave, retirement contributions, predictable cash flow, and the time it requires. Then list the corresponding needs when working for yourself. Obtain individual tax and benefits advice rather than applying a universal percentage.
Set a pretax owner-compensation target and keep household spending, business reserves, and business expenses separate. Business revenue cannot all become personal spending. Neither can advance payments for sessions that still require delivery. The point is to see the full transition cost before choosing a date.
